The uses of unmanned aerial vehicles are wide ranging. From filming to photography to inspections. Nowadays, drones have also established themselves in the services and even in agriculture.

While drones initially had limited capabilities due to their size, short battery life, and poor optics, among other factors, manufacturers have corrected these shortcomings in a relatively short period of time. Nowadays, drones are equipped with extremely advanced systems that facilitate control. In addition, optics have improved. Many times, drones have cameras that capture high-quality images even in difficult lighting conditions.

Wide range of uses for drones

For the past few years, one can observe an increased use of drones in uniformed services. One of the best examples is the Border Guard, whose responsibilities include protecting the country’s borders. Using drones, officers can observe even hard-to-reach terrain. In addition, the material recorded with a drone can be irrefutable evidence e.g. against people illegally crossing the border.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles are also used by the police. Thanks to them the officers are able to monitor a much larger area and reach places where there is no city surveillance system. Drone can extremely quickly rise to a very high altitude, so it is very discreet.
  • Their advantages have also been appreciated by people working in such fields as inspection of high voltage lines. This is a very dangerous job, not only because of the possibility of electrocution, but also because of the height and changing weather conditions. Using drones, it is possible to make a meticulous inspection of virtually anything and also record valuable footage.

Professional drones are able to stay in the air for up to several tens of minutes. Many times, users have spare batteries, thanks to which the drone’s working length is significantly extended.

Modern drones used in agriculture

Many farms use crop protection products. Spraying them requires the use of extremely expensive agricultural machinery. In some countries, drones have taken over this function. Although only a small proportion of farms are affected so far, the precision with which drones work makes this solution steadily gaining popularity. How does it work in practice?

  • An unmanned aircraft is equipped with a special tank, into which, for example, fertilizer is poured. Then the exact place where the spraying is to take place is determined. As soon as the drone is over the selected area, it begins to administer the preparation according to strict guidelines.

Devices designed for such purposes are equipped with an extremely capacious battery, thanks to which they can work continuously for a long time.

Unmanned aerial vehicles used by the army

The military has been using drones for a long time, including during reconnaissance. Thanks to these devices, the topography of the terrain can be known in detail in a very short time. Unmanned aerial vehicles are used during maneuvers and various exercises. The ability to record high-definition videos provides valuable material that is invaluable when training soldiers.

Drones in the Fire Service

More recently, firefighters have also been using drones. With modern thermal imaging cameras, officers can monitor very large areas and look for potential fires. Thanks to drones, they are detected much faster and thus their spread is limited.

  • The ability to quickly ascend to a very high altitude translates into the fact that drones are great for monitoring forests. Their use is especially advisable during droughts, during which the risk of fire increases significantly.

Thanks to a thermal imaging camera, firefighters can accurately assess the degree of danger and also check whether the fire has been completely extinguished. Drones are especially useful when you need to get to hard-to-reach places. Instead of risking human life and health, one can use a drone and conduct a detailed visual inspection of, for example, the roof of a tall building.
