The electrical industry is not only a very interesting occupation, but also a very practical one. Knowledge of electricity, even the basic, can be extremely useful. We suggest where to start and how you can master the basics of electricity.

What to pay attention to, starting to work on electricity?

First of all, it is worth noting that the well-known saying “the electrician does not touch electricity” has little to do with reality. So remember to always approach the electrical work with extreme caution, and before you grab the cables and wires, get to know the basic issues, principles and phenomena associated with electricity.

Basic electrical concepts

Let’s start learning by explaining the basic terms related to electricity. Understanding them will certainly help you get started in this field.

  • ES, or overcurrent switch – this is one of the basic elements of electrical installations protecting electrical circuits and final consumers from the effects of electrical overloads and short circuits. You will find it in virtually every home switchboard. However, there are many types of circuit breakers. We divide them based on their tripping characteristics, rated current and rated short circuit capacity.
  • Electrical box – this is a component that is used to protect electrical connections from external influences and installation of electrical accessories, for example, sockets, switches, etc.
  • Cube – it is one of the elements of electrical equipment used for making electrical/mechanical connections
  • Surge arresters – their task is to protect the installation against surges caused by lightning and switching operations associated with power failures.

It is also worth knowing what is the division of electrical voltage. Based on their value, they are mainly divided into high voltage (abbreviated WN, voltage between 60,000 volts and 400,000 volts), medium voltage (abbreviated SN, voltage between 1,000 volts and 60,000 volts) and low voltage (abbreviated nN, voltage up to 1,000 volts).

Equipment for the beginning electrician

When starting out as an electrician, it’s a good idea to equip yourself with the right equipment that will help you optimize your work time and make the whole process significantly easier. What equipment to choose at the beginning? First of all, you’ll need a tape measure, which is used in electrical installations to determine the points of light fixtures, sockets, places for cable penetration, etc. It’s also worth getting an SDS hammer drill, which you’ll need for drilling holes for junction boxes and mounting brackets

Also invest in an electric test tube, which is a basic tool used to check for the presence of voltage in an electrical circuit, and other tools needed for so-called “white assembly,” such as insulating tape, a set of electric screwdrivers, a set of knives, automatic insulation strippers, wire cutters, insulated pliers, side pliers, pliers, and cable presses.

Be sure to also equip yourself with measuring tools, for example, a voltage indicator, a digital multimeter, a digital detector and an electrical meter.
