What is 1.2379, X153CrMoV12, AISI D2, i.e. high quality tool steel for knifes making and machine elements? This is high-quality steel, which is characterised by very good parameters in terms of the use of this material for further processing and production. It is a high carbon steel, which is characterised by wear resistance and corrosion resistance. It is very resistant to deformations and cracks occurring during the hardening process. Thanks to chromium content, products made of this knife steel are not destroyed by high temperatures and don’t cause thermal conductivity. What else do you need to know about this excellent wear resistance steel?

  • What is such wear resistance tool steel used for?
  • How does this carbon steel react to heat treatment? Can it be considered as stainless steel?

What is such wear resistance tool steel used for?

What can be produced from this particular and high resistance steel tool, such as 1.2379, Aisi D2, X153CrMoV12? These can be, for example, cutting tools which, thanks to their high chromium content, have a high level of corrosion resistance. These will also be tools used in industries where the tools used must have high abrasion resistance and high wear resistance. Most often, these are various types of punches, reamers, thread rolling dies, and cutters. We are also talking about tools that, due to their solid workmanship and the type of steel, are ideal for cutting cutters, cylinders, retractors, cold rolling jaws and threads, etc.

Where else can the steel be used? It can certainly be used in plants producing tools for cutting paper, boards intended for the production of cutting dies, deburring machines, and many other machine parts.

Thanks to its properties, it is also used by artists and blacksmiths who produce knives and blades.

It can be hardened and even then still retains its dimensional stability during this process. This is one of many reason why it is such a popular choice for industry considered as one of the best steel with high level of carbon content.

High quality tool steel for knifes and machine elements is steel that can be welded if individual elements are damaged and they require quick repair.

How does this carbon steel react to heat treatment? Can it be considered as stainless steel?

The type of steel that increases wear resisance differs from other tool steels in its parameters and the processes to which it can be subjected. It can be used in production that requires heat treatment process, such as soft annealing. The temperature needed is 820 – 860 degrees Celsius. When it comes to relief annealing, you should achieve a temperature of 600 – 700 degrees Celsius. Hardening takes place at a temperature of 960 – 1030 degrees Celsius, and tempering in air at a temperature of 220 – 550 degrees Celsius.

Due to the high chromium content, this product can be considered stainless steel.

This type of carbon steel with great mechanical and physical properties is most commonly used in the production of the above-mentioned elements. However, you can get it in the form of round, flat or square bars. It is also available as sheets and cut plates, as well as forgings and forged bars.
